Tutoring
The Center for ASL/English Bilingual Education and Research (CAEBER) offers ASL Tutoring Services on a fee-for-service basis to members of the Gallaudet community as well as external clients. ASL tutoring is generally not recommended for new signers, nor should it be seen as a substitute for the ASL 1-6 class sequence.
Please NOTE that individuals are cautioned against using tutoring as a “crash course” to prepare for the ASLPI. Generally, it is not possible to “study” for a language proficiency interview and tutoring will not produce “overnight” improvements in your ASL skills.
Among the ways that tutoring can benefit ASL learners are:
- To supplement or reinforce what is being learned in an ASL class
- To focus on specific areas of ASL learning
- To prepare for a specific lecture, presentation
- To follow-up on specific recommendations from a diagnostic assessment
- To enhance ability to use ASL in specific academic, professional, technical or artistic contexts
How do I sign up for Tutoring?
Be sure to include all available time slots.
Fees:
Faculty/staff and general public: $45.00
Off-campus students (including consortium) $35.00
Full-time Gallaudet students $25.00
Make checks payable to the Center for ASL Literacy, and give to the tutor at the beginning of each session.
In some cases, fees for full-time Gallaudet faculty, students and staff are covered by academic departments and/or the administration. Please let us know in the COMMENTS section of the online form if your fees will be covered. The CASLL will handle the billing process for your tutoring sessions.
What happens next?
- Your completed tutoring form is reviewed and you will be assigned a qualified tutor based on schedule availability and reason for tutoring.
- We will then arrange for you to meet your tutor at the CASLL, at which time guidelines will be reviewed.
- Following the initial meeting, you will be responsible for scheduling sessions with your tutor. These will not be arranged by the CASLL.
- If you experience any problems with your tutoring sessions, please contact the CAEBER immediately by either sending email to caeber@gallaudet.edu.
Customer Satisfaction:
We are very interested in receiving your comments about the tutoring you received. Please take the time to complete the Customer Satisfaction Questionnaire so that we may use that information to improve our services.
This form will be provided to you by your tutor at the conclusion of your tutoring sessions, or you may download the form (MS Word file) to complete.
