ASL Teacher Enhancement Program

Beginning in the fall of 2005, the CASLL offered a new Professional Studies & Training (PST) course for ASL Teachers. The course “Classroom Observation” is the first in a series of classes as part of the ASL Teacher Enhancement Program which will lead to a certificate in ASL teaching. It is designed for non-degree seeking ASL teachers who wish to improve or update their knowledge and skills.

To take the Classroom Observation course, you must meet the following prerequisites:

  • American Sign Language Proficiency Interview level of 4.0 or higher
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four year post-secondary institution
  • Documentation outlining completed coursework or equivalent training in the following areas:
    • Introduction to Linguistics
    • ASL Linguistics Structure
    • Deaf Culture and History
    • 2nd language acquisition
  • VISTA training for at least Level 1
  • Minimum two years experience teaching ASL

The paperwork will be reviewed and you will be notified as to whether you meet the minimum qualifications. You will then be permitted to register for the course.
